Balance Your Work at Home Day with a Housework Break

Do you find it hard to concentrate on your home business if you can see housework that needs to be done ?

Or, do you shut the door to your home office and let the housework pile up in the rest of your home ?

The chances are that you are somewhere between these two extreme but still could use some help in finding a balance between working from home and doing the housework.

Taking one or two daily breaks from work to accomplish household tasks can help you to achieve that balance.

First of all, decide how long your housework break will be. Somewhere between 20 and 45 minutes is ideal. If you take less than 20 minutes, you may not finish many household tasks and if you spend more than 45 minutes on housework, you may find that it has an adverse impact on your small business.

Next, decide on a time of day for your housework break. When in your working day are you at your least productive? Is it in the middle of morning when your initial burst of energy has waned? Or, is it late in the afternoon when your concentration has disappeared?

Once you have determined a time of day for your housework break, write it in your schedule and ensure that you keep to it everyday.

During your housework break, challenge yourself to do as much housework as possible. If you wish, you can first write a list of all the tasks that need to be carried out and then work through them. Or, you could focus on a different room each day, so that the whole of your home will be clean and tidy by the end of each week.

To make the housework break more fun, time how long a certain task takes you and then challenge yourself to beat that time on the next occasion that you start the same task. Not only will you accomplish more during your housework breaks, but you will also inject some fun and a sense of achievement into mundane chores.

Don’t do anything other than housework during your housework break. If the phone rings, let it switch over to voicemail and don’t listen to the message until the break is over. Focus on your household tasks as you would on your work during the rest of the day.

If you begin to schedule in daily housework breaks, you will be amazed at the positive results. You will feel happier in your home and work environment and your family will also reap the benefits of a cleaner and tidier home.
